Birth Certificates & Wedding Couple Identification

A birth certificate is the critical document that must be presented, in order for a couple to be legally married within Australia. Without an authentic copy of this certificate, it is illegal for any couple to be married under Australian Law.

If you do not have a birth certificate, or you have misplaced or lost your birth certificate, you can apply to the Marriage Registry in your State or Territory to provide you with an authentic copy. There will most likely be a fee associated with the reproduction of your birth certificate.

Authentic Birth Certificates

A Marriage Celebrant who receives a birth certificate from a wedding couple, will assume that it is the original (or an authentic copy). If the certificate issued to the Celebrant is not authentic, then the marriage can be voided, and legal proceedings will ensue.

Passports

If you were born overseas and do not have (or cannot recover) your birth certificate, you may use your passport as evidential proof of your age and birth date. In all other circumstances where a birth certificate cannot be produced, a Statutory Declaration must be signed.
