Legal and Personalised Marriage Vows
Tim Manger
Civil Marriage Celebrant

There are certain legal requirements (Legal Vows) during the exchange of your marriage vows, specifically what must be uttered, what can be changed, and what can be added.

This is of particular importance, because it may affect the way you write your Personalised Vows. Your personalised vows must not contradict or override the legal vows, whilst the legal vows can only be changed marginally (if at all), and must be approved by your celebrant.

Below outlines the difference between the required Legal Vows and your Personalised Vows. During your wedding ceremony, Tim finds it better to exchange the Legal Vows first, then immediately follow these with your Personalised Vows.

Legal Vows
[Minimum Legal Wording (which must be included)]

Groom to Bride

"I call upon the people [persons] here present [today] to witness that I, ____________________, take you, ___________________________ to be my legally [lawfully] wedded wife from this time onward [forward]";

Bride to Groom

"I call upon the people [persons] here present [today] to witness that I, ____________________, take you, ___________________________ to be my legally [lawfully] wedded husband from this time onward [forward]";

Personalised Vows

[The following are examples of what can be added (in addition) to the above Legal Vows]

Vow 1

Groom to Bride

I vow to journey with you for all eternity; I shall be a shield for your back as you are for mine; you are the notes to my music, and the lyrics to my song. You are the stage upon which I dance, and the sprit that guides me home. From this day forward, it will be your name be that lights my hallways, and the children we share who give life to my soul; It will be your eyes that I smile upon each morning, and your inspiration that will forever in me, become the candle that incandescently burns.

Bride to Groom

I too vow to journey with you for all eternity as soulmates we grow old; I vow to be your rock, your compass whenever there is uncertainty, and your lighthouse whenever you sail into stormy waters; I too shall be a shield for your back as you are for mine, and promise to love our children to the end of time. But above all, I vow that yours... mine... ours

Vow 2

Loving what I know of you, and trusting what I do not yet know

I eagerly anticipate the chance to grow together, getting to know the woman you will become and falling in love a little more every day

I promise to love and cherish you through whatever life may bring us

Vow 3

_______________, I marry you with my eyes wide open

From the moment our paths crossed, you’ve captivated me, challenged me, frustrated me and improved me in ways no person has done before

And I have fallen in love with you again and again

I promise to be true to you, to support and encourage you and to challenge and frustrate you

I truly believe we are good for each other and that we will continue to grow stronger together

Vow 4

I will trust you and respect you, laugh with you and cry with you,

Loving you faithfully through good times and bad, regardless of the obstacles we may face together

I give you my hand, my heart, and my love, from this day forward for as long as we both shall live

Important:

As a Celebrant, Tim can either compose or assist you to write your own Personalised Vows. The absolute essential step, is to ensure that the vows you write for each other, do not contradict the legal vows
